Why manhole monitoring is needed

Written by Jacqueline L. Mulhern | 2/21/23 3:00 PM

Someone asked me recently why digital monitoring is essential for the care & maintenance of a manhole. I briefly explained that Ayyeka's Wavelet datalogger & FAI Platform are efficient methods to measure & manage levels of drainage & sewage. He looked skeptical & asked, "So what if it overflows?" I'll give some background on the subject and then discuss how monitoring benefits wastewater utilities.

Let's take a look at the top 3 reasons for manhole maintenance.

1. Safety: Manholes can be hazardous workplaces, with the risk of gas build-up, lack of oxygen, or other hazards. By monitoring manholes, workers can be alerted to dangerous conditions and take appropriate precautions.

2. Maintenance: Manholes are an important part of the infrastructure for sewer and water systems. By monitoring them, operators can detect any damage or wear and tear and schedule maintenance or repairs as needed.

3. Efficiency: Monitoring manholes can also help optimize the operation of sewer and water systems by detecting leaks or other problems that can cause inefficiencies or waste. By identifying these issues early, operators can take corrective action and improve system performance.

Why choose Ayyeka? How does digital monitoring benefit wastewater utilities?

It's amazing that, in the 21st century, some utilities still wait for sewers to overflow before they do anything about the problem. Not only is it unnecessary, but it's also dangerous, too.

Once the manhole cover is opened, Ayyeka's Wavelet datalogger fits easily inside the sewer & attaches to most sensors on the market. No Wi-Fi connection or electricity is needed; data on level is collected & transmitted with cellular data. A long-lasting battery powers the device. It works independently of urban infrastructure.

Data is received to any device, and the FAI Platform organizes it into easy-to-read dashboards. Alerts are set by the user when level exceeds pre-determined thresholds. Utilities save thousands of hours of operational costs when they don't have to send someone to the field to check levels in person.  Maintenance & planning become easier with the latest information, as opposed to waiting for a tech to return from the field with old data. Sometimes, the tech returns without data after finding that the meters aren't working. With Ayyeka, utilities immediately find out about problems and fix them sooner.

Ayyeka knows the future of sewer infrastructure because we are building it.
